Stephen J. Albro House, 1876
The Stephen J. Albro House is a Queen Anne cottage built on a small, simple scale. While the house is outside of the prime focus period for NRF, the building is a very nice vernacular example of a particular architectural style.
The Albro House is one-and-a-half stories and shows many elements of the Queen Anne style in a very concise package; shingles and clapboards for siding, bracketed window headers and cornices, along with an irregular footprint and a quirky dormer over the front entry.
The Newport Restoration Foundation acquired the building as a condition of buying other land and buildings on Green Street. This was not uncommon during the early years of NRF. The Foundation was intent on 18th century buildings which some owners would gladly sell if NRF also purchased other buildings as part of a package. Thus, NRF ended up with several 19th and even 20th century buildings in order to purchase the desired nearby 18th century structure.
The Stephen J. Albro House is on its original site. The Newport Restoration Foundation purchased the house in 1969 and restored it in 1975.
